The “pill” can work in different ways. It can act as a true contraceptive some months by suppressing the part of the brain which signals for ovulation to begin. But they also work to change the lining of the uterus to make it more difficult for the already conceived baby to implant. Very conservative estimates put the death of the conceived baby between two and ten percent; some studies say it can be up to 50% of the time.

The IUD always causes an abortion. It is not contraceptive in nature at all.

Depo-Provera, a very common method of birth control today, acts as both a contraceptive and abortifacient, causing early abortions forty to sixty percent of the time.
