Contraception (Birth Control)
It may surprise you that only a few methods of birth control called contraception are truly contraceptives. |
Contraceptives are defined by their very word, they
prevent conception—the fertilizing of an egg, by sperm, which
is the beginning of human life.
True contraceptives/contraception include: |
1. |
Vasectomy (the cutting of the vas deferens in males) |
2. |
Tubal ligation (the clipping/banding of fallopian tubes in women) |
3. |
The condom |
4. |
The diaphragm |
5. |
The cervical cap |
6. |
Spermicidal foams, gels, creams, sponges, and suppositories |
Other methods of birth control on the market today are not barrier methods of contraception, they are, in fact, abortifacients. This means that they can work by not allowing the already fertilized egg to implant in the uterine wall----in other words, they work in the body to cause early abortions. Abortifacients include: |
1. |
The I.U.D. |
2. |
The Injectables (i.e. Depo Provera) |
3. |
The Implantables |
4. |
“The Pill” |
5. |
The Transdermal patch |
6. |
The Vaginal Ring |
7. |
The Morning After Pill |
8. |
RU 486 |
The “pill” can work in different ways. It can act as a true contraceptive some months by suppressing the part of the brain which signals for ovulation to begin. But they also work to change the lining of the uterus to make it more difficult for the already conceived baby to implant. Very conservative estimates put the death of the conceived baby between two and ten percent; some studies say it can be up to 50% of the time. |

The IUD always causes an abortion. It is not contraceptive in nature at all. |
Depo-Provera, a very common method of birth control today, acts as both a contraceptive and abortifacient, causing early abortions forty to sixty percent of the time. |
